Explanation of Gender for Pride Run Registration:

The Vancouver Frontrunners and Vancouver Pride Society are excited to present the first Vancouver Pride Run and Walk with a third race category to celebrate the gender diversity and vibrancy of our community. We invite you to register in the category with which you identify in terms of your gender. We will be giving out prizing for top competitors in each category. During the registration process, you will find three categories:

a. Male (including Cis/Trans)
b. Female (including Cis/Trans)
c. Gender Variant or Mixed

The term “cis” is an abbreviation for cisgender, which is defined as those whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. The term “trans” is an abbreviation for transgender, which is defined as the state of one's gender identity or gender expression not matching one's assigned sex. Gender variant is behaviour or gender expression that does not conform to dominant gender norms of male and female. For more information on terminology and information regarding gender, please visit: http://itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2012/03/the-genderbread-person-v2-0/.

The Running Room registration system does not allow the change or removal of the question regarding gender on the first page. However, we have adjusted the system to allow for flexibility. Given these constraints, we ask that you skip the question of gender on the first page and answer it on the second page selecting from one of the three race categories listed above.

On the day of the event, universal Port-a-Potties will be made available at Brockton Oval. Signage and trained volunteers will support the safe and practical use of these spaces by all participants. We hope this facilitates everyone’s preparation for and participation in the event no matter where you identify along the gender spectrum.

We appreciate that gender is complex and nuanced in its form, expression, aspects, and terminology. We understand that these categories are far from all encompassing or representative of the full range of gender fabulousness. We are proposing the current categories as a starting point to foster discussion and to generate additional ideas to improve future events. We will be asking your feedback and suggestions during a post-event survey. We appreciate your patience as we work out the details of the nexus between gender and sporting events. And we look forward to collaborating with you in making this event as inclusive and inviting as possible. See you on July 26, 2014!
